The Systems That Destroy Rights

The story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. are different stories, but have similar meanings for, systems limit freedom, top percent of people have control over the lower ones, and symbol. They follow a system they do not like and if they disobey the system they will pretty much die. They are restraint when trying to defend their rights because someone with greater power always has power over them, while they suffer and no one does anything because it is not them who the bad things are happening too. This is happening in our daily lives as well.

In “The Lottery”, the people put their names inside of a black box every June twenty-six for a lottery that the village is force to participate. Thinking everyone has an equal chance of being selected, whoever gets chosen has to die by stones, it is not even a real lottery because someone chooses who they want to die. In “Harrison Bergeron”, where if you are born smart you are limited to certain thoughts because of the amendments, they are force into wearing equipment; unless you are in the organization that has power over everyone. They systems have control over the people. Whenever the new generation wants some kind of change the people who have more power will turn them down or make some kind of excuse of what is going to happen, “pack of crazy fools, listening to the young folks, nothing’s good enough for them. Next thing you know, they’ll be wanting to back to living in caves” (pg. 241). If the people do not listen to the systems they get punished, where they are destined to die, in “Harrison Bergeron” the people who try and take of the equipment will have the police go after them and take them to jail, if they refuse they will die. They are limiting their freedom because they are being controlled mentally and physically thinking they are equal. The people should be thinking, “Who knows better’n I do what normal is” (Pg. 201). People in the world need to fight for their rights because if they do not nothing will change. In a country people will need to team up in order for the higher powers to change, the problem with that is that over ninety percent of people don’t do anything. Like in the lottery when someone wants to get of the black box nobody cares because they were not chosen. People in our present time if something bad happens to someone else they do not care as long as it is not them. Then when something bad happens to the person who did not listen they want the whole world to listen to them, but in reality no one will by the time they notice it will be too late like in the lottery.

In the story “The Lottery”, the two people have control over someone life because they put who they want to kill in the black box. That is not right how they have so much power over the people, but it is no different than our current generation.  People in our current generation are greedy that they make other people work for them for low salaries. The present day society people have to work and if they do not show up to work they can easily be replaced by another person. Like if they are worthless. We live in a country where the poor have to pay more taxes then the rich. The top companies sometimes they do not pay taxes because they are supposedly creating more jobs for people. Whenever the country needs more money they tax the people who have less power. When the United States began the average worker made one tenth the amount of the owner, where as in the present time the average worker makes less than one three hundredths to the owner. They need to fight for equal rights like Harrison. The country would be a better place because there would be more equality financially. If the rich were taxed more the lower class would not have to be taxed as much and they could open a new small business where they could employ more people. People would have more money so they could spend it more which will increase the net worth of the country instead of increasing the depth of the economy. Also people shouldn’t exaggerate with the rights like in “Harrison Bergeron” because that will cause problems, “Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else” (pg. 200).  A law that limits people from what they want to be is not right imagine if someone can find a way to increase life expectancy in the human body to the age of two-hundred, but they will never find the it because everyone is limited in their mentally. Harrison was trying to show the people that they shouldn’t be limited by the government’s rules. The people believed him and wanted to go to his side because they showed Harrison how freely he was and the people with the equipment. He lights up a spark into people’s minds, but before they could react the equipment they are wearing erases their memory. If people want something to change they need some kind of idea to be put into their heads.

There are multiple symbols being portrayed by “Harrison Bergeron” and “The Lottery. In “Harrison Bergeron” they symbol there are trying to show the readers that they should not keep quiet about what we think because if they do nothing, nothing will change or someone will make changes for them, like the government putting on the equipment to every citizen that was not equal in order to make them equal. Another symbol might be that the more humanity advances in technology the dumber humanity is going to be because the human brain will use less of its neurons while technology will do the work instead of their brain. If people are willing to pass a law that limits them what is humanity coming too, probably the end. Imagine the doctors if they were limited they wouldn’t even know how to treat the patient or how business people run their companies. The world would fall into chaos. In the story “The Lottery” the symbol is that people will cheat at the life the way two of them cheated the lottery so they can get rid of the people they do not like in their village. Furthermore ones with more power have more control over the people with less; the way major companies have control over their workers. If the worker is getting paid too much they will probably replace them for someone else just to increase their net worth of the company. Anyone will do anything for more power because everyone has greed even if it hurts someone else. As Stephen Hawking states, “we are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain looking inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded planet.”  That if we keep our greed up and stupidity we are all going to end up killing ourselves or killing the planet we are living in which will still lead to the death of humanity.

While reading both of the stories “The Lottery” and “Harrison Bergeron”, People should be able to see how wrong it is to take control over a community with a system just to gain more power, like a monarch. The rules that set should provide people to be free, they should not be limited to what someone thinks is normal because everyone is different, so normal would not be normal for someone else. Furthermore the symbols being portrayed that greed is going to lead to the downfall of humanity because people think that power is main way to go but in reality people need to see beyond and realize survivability should be on the top of their list, not money or control over people. Also People should put themselves in other people situation in order to understand what they have gone through, for example if all the rich and poor switched for one day they might see how each one of them struggles in their daily lives. Then maybe people will change their mind and see greed for more money or power over people isn’t the way to go.

The Systems That Destroy Rights

The story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. They both have different stories, but they have similar meanings, for example they follow a system they do not like and if they disobey the system they will die. Our forefathers will probably not be happy into what this country has become because of how higher powers manipulate their rights on other people to get what they want.

The Lottery

In the story the Lottery Mr. Warner says” Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon”( paragraph 32).The old man Warner is saying that the lottery is going to be in June to the young people. They should keep the old traditions and it does not matter if some other town gave up the black box because they do not they are going to be living in caves. While the young generation that is wanting to change the black box because they see its probably not right but the old generation has more power then the young folks. The old man is trying to use scar tactics to make the young people believe that there has to be a lottery every year.

I believe the story is trying talk about our own society, in which men are selected to go to the military by force. When a man from a family is chosen to go to army they cannot refuse because they will get thrown into prison, so they try to force them to go to the army and fight under harsh conditions. They will most likely die in war while battling some country they do not want to be a part of or have some excuses why they are there and most of the time turns out the excuse they were told was not even true. They will die by being chosen just like if your chosen in The Lottery.
